This book focuses on anthroposophical psychiatry and supportive education during the Nazi era. How did the directors of the psychiatric sanatorium Wiesneck (Germany) and the anthroposophical homes attempt to protect their patients, as well as the children and adolescents in their care, from forced sterilization and “euthanasia”? How did they negotiate with the authorities, and under what conditions were individual institutions able to continue their work? These questions are examined on the basis of patient and child records, correspondence with public authorities, with the parents of the children and adolescents, with doctors, supportive educators, and numerous other documents. The study also examines the escape routes taken by supportive educators of Jewish descent, as well as the murder of a home director and a supportive educator by the Nazis; the founding of the Camphill community in exile in Scotland; and the flight of physician Ita Wegman, along with children and adolescents, to Ticino (Switzerland). The book concludes with short biographies of anthroposophical doctors and medical students of Jewish descent.
